How did you identify your passion when starting your businesses?
Well, with my first business, BlkGirlDaily, I wanted to start something important to me. I’ve always wanted to share my experiences, wisdom, and things I’ve learned so that they could help someone else. This website evolved to encompass tips on entrepreneurship in addition to advice on friendships, relationships, and self-awareness.
My passion for starting Ray Calloway came from all the things I’ve taught myself throughout my career and from going to school for software development. I desire to see other people win, and it’s too often that people use the excuse of “I haven’t started that thing because I don’t know what to do”. With that in mind, I assist you with your website design, podcast, or creative direction needs.
How do you handle managing your business and personal life?
In an effort to incorporate as much balance as possible, I use block time or schedule certain projects on certain days throughout the week. Usually, before I begin working for the day, I take my daughter to school and head to the gym. Once back home, I make breakfast and watch a YouTube video or listen to a podcast. Thereafter, I complete any consultations, reply to emails, and work through my to-do list. I enjoy having variety throughout my day, which is why none of my days ever look the same. There are times when I get overwhelmed with projects, but when that happens, I take out time to re-organize myself, control what I can control… and leave the rest in the hands of the Universe.
What are your major responsibilities?
Web design, creative direction, planning, and customer service. Yes, everything else is important, but these are the major ones for me because my audience, clients, colleagues, and collaborating partners are very important to me. They support me, so I must support them. Each of my businesses requires all of these things.
Who inspires you?
Currently, people whom I observe from afar who are where I want to be. I watch their IG Lives, listen to their podcasts, and try to soak up as much of their advice as possible… many of these women grew up with nothing and are now running multi-six-figure businesses. They are such an inspiration.
If you could go back in time and see or change something, when would it be, and what would you do?
The only thing I would change is realizing my strengths earlier. Spending most of my twenties trying to figure out what I like and what I was good at caused me to feel like I was behind. Sometimes I felt like if I realized my calling sooner, I would be in a much better place. At the same time, it took time to learn my skillset… I am still learning, but I am also mature enough now to understand how to leverage my skills.
What advice would you give to a kid?
I would advise any young person to remain curious and be resourceful. If there is something you don’t know or understand, ask questions. Get to know the smart or nerdy people around you. They are a great resource in grade school. Also, be kind to everyone you meet. Care about your reputation and creating connections that can help you throughout life. Lastly, speak up for yourself and learn how to set clear boundaries. No is a complete sentence.
Describe yourself in three words: Resourceful, sarcastic & strategic.
Favorite color? Any shade of blue or green.
Favorite number? 7… honorary mention 11, 14 & 21.
Favorite room in the house? The Office.
Favorite video games? Left 4 Dead, MarioKart, and Mortal Kombat/Injustice.
Favorite Foods? Italian, American, and Mexican.
There are so many more questions, so I’ll stop here. I hope this gave you more of an idea of what type of woman, friend, wife, and mother I am.
